Consider getting your carpets and furniture steam cleaned. You could contact a vendor like ServPro that specializes in restoring homes that have been damaged by smoke, fire, and flood. How do i get ride of the smokey smell from my fireplace?
Try setting a skunk loose in your house and make him spray, that will get rid of the smell for sure!!
first off, never throw water in the firepl. it can explode the bricks and blow back at you.

now you need to build a hot fire with wood, eucalyptus sp madrone walnut etc and let it clean and burn out your fp and chimney. as for the room, if its to bad you may have to tsp the walls and even paint to remove the smell.

never use fire logs they are just paper and clog up the chimneys.
Look for people in your town to help with this.
I'm sorry to say that smoke causes irreparable damage. Insurance companies do cover Smoke Damage Claims so call your provider. If in some way that doesn't work out then you will have no other recourse but repainting the entire place. First of course you will have to start with a coat of KILZ which seals off any odor that penetrated the old paint and sheet rock. Then pick out your colors and start having fun. Call a bunch of friends and have a painting party barbecue. You will also have to thoroughly clean out all your cabinets. Smoke particles are so microscopic and get into every little thing.
