My husband I and just moved into an older home that has that musty attic smell. We can't find where the odor is originating from, so any solutions would have to involve the whole house. We've Febrezed the devil out of the place and installed air freshners in the central air returns with minimal change. Any suggestions?Does anyone know how to get ride of an intraceable musty odor?
If there is wallpaper on the walls or in the closets that is the odor.It has kept all the odors for years.Did you febreeze it? You can also use pineso to remove the smell but you have to wash everything-wood trim, doors, floors, inside closet walls, all walls. If the odor came from being closed up for a number of years or if an elderly person lived there and didn't open the windows to freshen it, then the odor has permeated everything. Did you febreeze the walls top to bottom and the ceiling? Did you spray the attc?I used febreeze in my old house after I had a kit. fire and it took all of the smoke smell away. I had to wait on the ins. inspector for a few days and couldn't stand the smell of smike. I sprayed carpets, windows, curtains, walls, furniture, cabinet鈥?ceiling and all and it went away. The ins. guy said he had never been into a home with a fire and he couldn't smell it. That is why I ask if you have actually sprayed the house and not just up into the air. It takes several bottles but it will work. Try opening all of the windows also before the weather gets too cold and leave them open for as long as possible. If there is furniture or carpets left in the house from before, shampoo them very well and then use febreeze. It will take a little time to get it all out because it took years to get that way. Don't forget to do your furniture and curtains because they are now absorbing the odor as well. I bought my many bottles of febreeze at Big Lots because it is only 2.50 there! You can get coupons for it on the internet also. They mail you a booklet of several! One of their automatic spray freshners or the one that looks like a CD may help also. Best wishes and have a happy life in your old home!Does anyone know how to get ride of an intraceable musty odor?
Clean up all of the old dirty underwear the previous owner left behind. They really shouldnt be in the kitchen anyhow, it is so unsanitary.
You may want to pull up a small piece of floor to make sure there isn't mold. Mold is a common trigger for Musty odor. I have a very strong spray called OZIUM. It is an air sanitizer. I bought it to take smells out also, but, I didn't realize how strong it was. You spray it in the center of the room for no longer then 2 seconds. Then wait for it to take over. Like I said though, you should pull up part of the floor or even a wall in the bathroom. Check the basement if there is one. Good Luck with that.
try cleaning the house with lemon ammonia, it really helps with odors.
you can also burn scented oil candles, the fragrance seems to linger longer and could eventually become your new house smell.
after a while your regular smell of laundry, soaps and cleaner will take over.
good luck.
Buy a Living Air machine, we have one in our home and it is remarkable how it removes odors from pets, smoke, mildew and mold.
