How do you get ride of mildew smell in house?

I just bought an older house, the basic did have some leaking issues, but they are resolved. The upstairs still smells very old and just plain bad. I've painted, cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned some more. Any suggestions other than getting air freshners - I would like it to smell normal, not ';perfumy';. First, waterproof the BASEMENT, spray the walls with bleach and you will be RID of the mildew odor. Do not use air FRESHENERS they just cover up the stench. How do you get ride of mildew smell in house?

Mold is toxic so it has to be cleaned up by professionals.
Some carpet cleaning companies have a chemical that can take it out of furniture and carpets. After they did that to my carpet, the house smelled perfumy for about three days only but after that the mildew smell was out of the carpets completly. I also used Lysol since that also kills mildew and mold, just in case some mold was left behind. However if its inside your walls, there no way to get it out of there and it can still make your house smell bad and unhealthy for you to breath in.
Try putting a dehumidifier in the basement. If there is any water in the air, it will go through your heating system when the air or heat is turned on. By using the dehumidifier, you take the water out of the air and this will stop the mold and mildew from growing. You may also want to change the filter in your furnace and use a filter that catches dust particles. In about two weeks your house should be rid of the smell.
